When I heard David Crosby had passed on, I felt so much gratitude for his music, and the experience I had growing up listening to the album ‘So Far’ by Crosby Stills Nash & Young on road trips. I remember just being hit by a wall of harmony in ‘Helplessly Hoping’ and getting chills from the beauty of it. Each person in my family would choose a part and this is how I learned to sing and be in harmony. As a young adult, singing what was true for me, in harmony with others, was key in me finding my authentic voice, and this theme runs throughout the song.

In 2007 I got to perform ‘Lay Me Down’ by Crosby Nash, together with my sister and brother and this song particularly inspired the spirit of ‘We Grow in Love’. I started writing it one night this January when I was putting my daughter down. I got a sudden wave of understanding of how we only grow in love. When someone can truly be with us, or know us in some form, we expand into our own self-knowing. The ways that others can be hard on us or particularly how we judge ourselves only blocks our true selves from coming through. I’ve written the song over the past 9 months and as I was finishing it I was thinking about generational patterns and the depth of pain of separation that we feel when we are hurt. When I look with compassion I see the experience ultimately opens us up to the infinite experience of love. We don’t lose love, rather, we are love.
